Push notifications & engagement
The notification and re-engagement systems that bring users back to the app after they've installed it, instead of losing them after one session.
In depth
What push notifications & engagement really involves
Push notifications are the most direct line to someone who's installed your app, and the easiest to abuse. Send too many irrelevant ones and people switch them off or uninstall. Send timely, useful ones, like an order update, a booking reminder or a reply, and they become part of why the app is worth keeping.
Permission comes first. Ask for notification access the moment the app opens, before the user knows why they'd want it, and you'll mostly get a no that's hard to reverse. Better to ask when the value is obvious, such as right after an order is placed and you can offer to tell them when it ships, with one line explaining what they'll receive.
After that it's about relevance and restraint. We separate messages people expect (transactional) from promotional ones they tolerate in small doses. We segment by behaviour, respect time zones and quiet hours, and cap frequency. Then we measure, so you can see what brings people back and stop what doesn't.

How it goes
How we approach push notifications & engagement
List the moments worth a message
Status changes, reminders, replies. We rank them and write the notification plan before touching any technical setup.
Design the permission flow
We choose when and how to ask, add a short explanation of the benefit, and plan a fallback for people who say no.
Set up delivery and segments
Delivery through the platform services, audience segments, scheduling and frequency caps, using a tool your team can actually run.
Measure and trim
Opens, return visits and opt-outs tell us what works. Messages that don't earn their place get removed.
Ideal for
Who this fits
Apps with declining post-install usage
Businesses with recurring offers or updates worth notifying users about
Watch out for
Common mistakes, and how we avoid them
Asking too early
A cold prompt gets denied. We ask when the benefit is clear.
Same message for everyone
Blasting one message ignores behaviour. Segments keep messages relevant.
Ignoring local norms
Timing and tone differ between markets. We account for time zones and expectations in India and the US.

Push notifications & engagement: common questions
Mostly, but permission rules and display differ. iOS needs an explicit opt-in, and Android versions have their own settings. We design for both.
