UI/UX for web

The structure, design, and mobile-first usability work that happens before development, so the site is planned around how visitors actually behave.

In depth

What ui/ux for web really involves

People use websites in a hurry. They scan, they skip, they leave a tab open and forget about it. Good UX design accepts that. It stops pretending visitors will read every word and instead makes the important things easy to spot.

We work in a fairly plain order. Structure first: what pages exist and how people move between them. Then layout, where we sort out what's most important on each screen. Visual style comes last, because pretty on top of a confusing structure still confuses.

On mobile there's less room, so priorities get sharper. A hero that looks great on a big monitor can push the actual offer below the fold on a phone. We design for the small screen first and let the desktop version expand from there.

How it goes

How we approach ui/ux for web

01

Sitemap and flows

We list the pages and the routes people take through them, checking that the most common goals take few clicks.

02

Wireframes

Rough greyscale layouts let us debate hierarchy without arguing about colours. They're quick to change and cheap to throw away.

03

Visual design

Typography, colour and imagery get applied to the agreed structure, with a small set of reusable components so the site stays consistent.

04

Review on real devices

We check the design on phones, tablets and laptops, with real text, since placeholder copy hides layout problems.

Ideal for

Who this fits

01

Sites being built from scratch

02

Existing sites that are hard to navigate or feel outdated

Watch out for

Common mistakes, and how we avoid them

Designing with fake text

Lorem ipsum never overflows or wraps awkwardly. Real content does, so we design with the real thing as early as we can.

Too many competing buttons

When everything's highlighted nothing is. We choose one primary action per page.

Low-contrast, tiny text

Light grey on white looks elegant and is hard to read. We keep text comfortably legible.

UI/UX for web: common questions

UX is how the whole experience works: structure, flow, how easy things are to find. UI is the visible layer, like colours, type and buttons. You need both, and UX should come first.
